Herbert B. Burns

May 13, 1932 ~ May 18, 2017 (age 85) 85 Years Old

Herbert B. Burns, 85, of Zelienople, formerly of Summerville (Kingsville), passed away Thursday, May 18, 2017 at the Passavant Community-Senior Living Community in Zelienople, PA, after a heroic battle to cancer.

Herb was born on May 13, 1932 in Summerville (Kingsville), PA. He was the son of the late Donald C. and Sarah (Wayland) Burns. Mr. Burns married the former Alvera Burkett on April 4, 1953 in Punxsutawney.  They celebrated 60 years of marriage together before her passing in July 2013.

Herb graduated from Clarion Limestone High School in 1950.  He was a 1961 graduate of Clarion State College with degrees in Special Education and Elementary Education. He was formerly a school teacher at Ridgway School District and retired from Clarion Limestone School District with over 30 years of teaching High School Special Education and Elementary Education. He was an active member of the NRA and a former member of PSEA. 

He was a member of the Trinity Point Church of God in Clarion and was active in church affairs. He was a man of strong faith, believing in the power and strength of Jesus Christ’s love and the beauty and peace that would await him Heaven after his passing.

Herb was the beloved father, brother, grandfather, and friend to many.  In his earlier years, Herb enjoyed hunting, gardening, wood working, working around the homestead farm, and spending time with family and friends.   

Herb is survived by: a daughter Kimberly F. Willoughby and her husband, James of Zelienople, PA; a son Donald C. Burns and his wife, Lanea of Knox; one brother, John Burns, and his wife Maxine of Summerville, PA.  four grandchildren include Benjamin Willoughby and Rachel Willoughby of Zelienople, PA, Jennifer Burns and Emily Burns of Knox, PA.   

He was preceded in death by: his beloved wife Alvera, his parents, an infant daughter Deborah Lynn Burns, and one sister Doris Hunger of Punxsutawney.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 3 P.M. and 6 to 8 P.M. on Sunday May 21 and from 10 to 11 A.M. on Monday May 22 at the McEntire-Weaver Funeral Home 504 East Penn Ave., Knox.  Funeral services will be held at 11 A.M. Monday in the funeral home with Pastor Bruce Wilson of Trinity Point Church of God officiating.  Interment will take place at the Coolspring Cemetery, Oliver Township, Jefferson County.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be made to the Trinity Point Church of God, 180 W. Trinity Drive Clarion, PA 16214.
