Edwin V. Apel

Edwin V. Apel, Sr., a former Oil City resident and U.S. Navy veteran, went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, in the early hours of October 8. He was a resident of Country Springs in Sligo, PA for the past nine years.

Born October 3, 1926, in Pittsburgh, Edwin was the son of the late Joseph and Elizabeth Guentner Apel.

After serving as a submariner in the Second World War, Mr. Apel returned home to Pittsburgh where he met and married his wife of 63 years, Marian Myers Apel, who died in 2011. In 1948, the Apels moved to Oil City where he owned and operated Apel Printing for twenty-some years. He also worked for Lug and Tug Lumber and Hardware, and served as a union carpenter for many years.

As a long-time member of Grace United Methodist Church in Oil City, Edwin flourished in practicing his Christian faith. After a powerful faith experience during a Lay Witness Mission weekend, the Apels began to open their home to adult Bible studies and a youth “Sharing Group” that attracted 30 or 40 youth on Monday nights for many years. Ed and Marian offered loving spiritual guidance and prayer support to many people through this ministry in their home.

Edwin and Marian had three children: Edwin Jr. (deceased, 2011; wife, Lorrie); Dara Sterling (husband, Jeff) of Mars, PA; and Scott (wife, Linda) of Knox, PA. A son, Mark Apel, died in infancy. Edwin had 8 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 26 at 11:00AM at Chapel on the Hill Assembly of God Church, 6202 Emlenton Clintonville Road, Emlenton, PA  16373.
