Jeremy, Justin and Jon,

I am very sorry to hear that your mom passed away. I haven't seen her much since moving away from Salem, but I will always remember her as someone who was ready to help out and get a job done. Whenever I would be back home and run into her, she was always willing to chat and catch up, like I'd never left. I remember when your dad passed away and how strong your mom seemed to be for the rest of us. Salem has lost another great one.

Thinking of you and of your families.

I couldn't help but think that Denise's obituary didn't begin to acknowledge the "true" Denise Pickens. My first encounter with Denise was watching her spend time with my friend's children while Denise was serving as a "Parent Educator" with Parents as Teachers and Clarion County Promise. Her job called for interacting with the pre-school children in the home and helping the parents to understand how they could assist their children as they entered new stages of development. The lesson plans were simple and the activities were fun, but Denise went above and beyond what was expected of her in this role. It was clear that the children adored her as she looked each one in the eye and listened to their childish stories. They knew that she valued them and enjoyed them. I watched as she made gnocchi with theses little ones. They learned. They giggled. Their mother learned and was inspired by this sweet, strong funny lady. Later, I became a Parent Educator and was honored to work beside Denise.....The kids came first..her kids, other people's kids....So here's to Denise.....a woman who gave so much to so many; a woman who cared deeply and gave her all to those she loved; a woman who lived with physical pain and yet greeted people with a smile. Yes..."she graduated from Clarion University, and she was a social worker," but these words don't begin to describe her influence on this community or its members. Jeremy, Justin, and Jon, I am so sorry for your loss! Your mother loved you so much, but I'm sure that you know that! You are in my prayers!

Although I haven't seen Denise for many year, I vividly remember the time we spent together in the Special Education field. Denise also worked in a group home with my sister and took her to Florida on a vacation. Denise's kindness and sense of humor lit up any dull room! We had many laughs together amid difficult situations. My deepest sympathy to her family. Sending you my thoughts and prayers.

Denise was a kind, compassionate and gentle soul. I remember many discussions with her on developing programming to best serve the clients she worked with. She cared deeply about those she worked with and was generous with both her time and effort. My condolences, not only to her family, but to all who were touched by her life.

Dear Jeremy, Justin, and Jon and all your family members,
I was so sorry to hear of your mother's death. She was a special woman with a beautiful heart, a living faith, and a strong commitment to her family, friends, and community. I always enjoyed visiting with her over the years. You three sons and your families brought her great joy and strength. As you join together may the sweet memories bring smiles in the midst of grief. I know her legacy of compassion will continue to live through those who have been touched by her kindness. God's comfort be with you all, Mrs. G.

Denise was always a great person to have a chat with, so enjoyed times I would run into her and we would catch up on her boys and she would ask about my children. She will be missed by many, her jolly personality, her smile and her friendliness. Life taken to short. You are all in our thoughts and prayers through these days. Hold onto the memories. Denise was 1 of the many rewards in my journey of recovery God has led me through and given me the opportunity to meet and get to know. She wasn't only a counselor or worker of mine over the years, but became my supervisor and co worker, as well as a friend and advocate and mentor. Denise you will forever be in my heart. I have learned and grown alot over the years from having the opportunity to be challenged by you. And always being questioned Hows that working for you? To her family you were blessed with the best mom ever thanks for sharing a piece of her with all of us. Much love and peace sent your way. Now its my turn to give back what Denise so freely shared with me, May God give me that love and desire and devotion to every soul.

She always had a kind word for everyone and seemed to have incredible timing to let you know she was thinking about you just when you needed it. Earth lost an incredible woman but we will see each other in Glory one day. I will miss my co-worker and friend.

Denise was a mother to all she met; she was a kind and caring person who loved you no matter who you were. Although she was dedicated to her work, she always talked about her family and what they were doing. You could tell how proud she was of each person.
Our condolences to you Jon, Jeremy and Justin and to your families as you will miss her the most but to the rest of us sh will always be just "Mama Pickens"
